While it's true that cosmetic conditions such as spider veins (clusters of discolored veins) arise more often in women, compared to women, a larger proportion of men suffer from PAINFUL varicose veins. 

Common risk factors for varicose veins in men include hereditary, obesity, and older age.  Unfortunately, men who suffer from varicose veins often rarely seek medical treatment, which can also exacerbate the problem. In fact, swollen and throbbing veins in men are much more pronounced than they are in women. Men are also more likely to suffer from aches and pains caused by their veins than women are, even though they rarely complain of the problem.

The good news is that the word is getting out to men:  Sclero­therapy—the removal of varicose and spider veins by injecting dilute medication —has become the fastest-growing cosmetic treatment for men. The number of sclerotherapy procedures performed on U.S. males has risen 225% over the past five years, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, compared with a 2.5% rise for women.

Men often develop varicose veins in their testicles, as well as in their legs. These problem veins in the testicles are known as varicoceles. This condition not only causes extreme pain, but can also cause the testicles to shrink, and even lead to infertility if not cared for properly. Some cases of varicocele require no medical treatment, and in fact, most physicians will not even suggest treatment unless pain or infertility occurs.  This condition can be effectively and safely treated with an outpatient procedure called varicocele embolization, which is also performed by the experienced physicians at Southern Maryland Vascular Institute.
